In 2006 Nancy Boyda made national news by beating Jim Ryun, an entrenched Republican, KU/Olympic track star and celebrity. She won by 4 points, a landslide for a Democrat in a bright red district. She is the only Democrat in 30 years to win this seat in Congress. She served on the House Agriculture and Armed Services committees. Following her time in Congress, Boyda was named as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Personnel at The Pentagon. Now in 2024, Nancy Boyda is running for KS-2 seat…another race that will be straight uphill!
Nancy has consistently been known as a moderate, independent, single-issue woman. In 2007 she said, “If we can’t find a way to speak to each other across the political, ideological, and religious divides, we will lose our democracy.” Today our country is dangerously divided. Trust in our country and trust in each other has been broken. But, Nancy has a vision that Kansas can take the leadership to do the hard work of rebuilding trust and with it hope
Nancy now lives simply on a small farm outside of Baldwin City with goats, hens, dogs, cats, an orchard, and gardens where friends and family can find respite. She is on the Board of and manages volunteers at the Homeless Resource Center. Nancy helps Ballard Center preschoolers grow 150 pounds of sweet potatoes (“the perfect whole food”), teaching them both the love and science of gardening. She is on the Board of the Lawrence Barn Dance Association, a traditional American folk dance group that promotes community through local music and unbelievably fun dancing.
Nancy graduated from William Jewell College with degrees in chemistry and education, and spent most of her professional career in pharmaceutical Research and Development. Though never political, she ran for Congress as a Democrat in 2004 (and lost), and then again in 2006 and won by 4 points.
